Why Shared AI Memory Matters — and Why You Should Control It

Every heavy AI user knows the ritual. It helps to separate three things that often get blurred together:
Conversational context is what the AI holds within one conversation. Ask a follow-up question and it knows what "it" refers to. Every modern AI does this; it evaporates when the session ends.
Persistent memory carries selected information across sessions: your name, preferences, ongoing projects, the marathon in October. This is what kills the repeated introduction.
Shared memory goes one step further: the same remembered context is available across different AI experiences. The research assistant knows what the writing assistant learned. - Purpose-bound. Memory exists to improve your experience — not to profile you for anyone else.
- Consent-first for connected data. Information from linked services (calendar, email) enters memory only because you connected the service — and leaves when you disconnect it.
